"Grey Sack" general refuse collections and re-cycling collections are done fortnightly on an alternating basis on a Tuesday of each week.
Actual dates can be seen at:
There are two large bins. The Black bin with the Black lid is for general waste that can't be re-cycled. The Black bin with the Blue lid is for re-cycling of tin cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and other plastics, other than plastic bags.
A sturdy smaller blue bag, which can be obtained from the Council depot on Claro Road, is for waste paper, newspaper and cardboard. Used take away Pizza boxes cannot be re-cycled due to the grease in the packaging, so should go into the Black lid bin.
The North Yorkshire Council plan to rollout a three bin system but we haven't been informed yet when this will be.
There are two waste re-cycling sites (HWRCs) serving the Harrogate area which you can use free of charge at present. These are located on Penny Pot Lane beyond the Army College and on Wetherby Road opposite Sainsbury's. The former is the most convenient for us. You must arrive in your car, unless you have previously registered a commercial vehicle for private use with the Council. To remain free of charge, from 27 April 2026, you will have to register yourself with the Council as a resident of North Yorkshire as they are introducing a charge for people visiting the HWRCs from another County. From 27 April 2026 you will be able to register your details at HWRC Registration , or by calling 0300 131 2131. Both HWRCs are open until 4:00pm during the winter and 5:00pm during the summer and are open 6 days a week, closing on Wednesdays.
